Facsimile

Just a little tidbit that I thought was interesting.  Did you know that Fax (as in a Fax Machine) is actually short for Facsimile?  According to Wikipedia:

facsimile (from Latin fac simile, “make like”) is a copy or reproduction of an old bookmanuscriptmapart print or other item of historical value that is as true to the original source as possible using, normally, some form of photographic technique. It differs from other forms of reproduction by attempting to replicate the source as accurately as possible in terms of scale, color, condition, and other material qualities.

This just came about as I was looking up contact information for Escape Van Rentals in New Zealand and saw a “facsimile” number listed.  I’m always curious about the origin of words, so if you know any other interesting ones, let’s hear them!
